16 Foods Americans Used to Love but Now Ignore

There are many foods that we used to adore but are now giving the cold shoulder. Remember Jello at every family gathering, or the thrill of a salad bar? How about Shake and Bake for an easy dinner fix? Let's take a trip down memory lane and look at 16 foods that have fallen out of favor.

1. Fad Foods

But what about fad foods? You know, items like deep-fried Twinkies or just about anything pickled. Do they stay around as a traditional special occasion dish or die slowly of obscurity? One forum poster was interested to know what foods people considered might be taking a long walk off a short plank regarding food preferences. And as always, the internet was happy to offer its best options.

2. Elaborate Gelatins

One user quickly pointed out that gelatins should be relegated to the nearest trash can outside of Jello. "When I think about elaborate gelatins, the only people I see doing that are my grandparents when they do a formal meal. I don't think anybody in my generation would keep that tradition alive."

3. Blood Cleaner

Another person is positive that liver is one food that people don't flock to. "I feel like liver was probably more popular a few generations ago and will only continue to decline in popularity. I've never eaten it."

4. Humor Hour

One interested party made a wisecrack that'll get a chuckle. "I just ate a sandwich. It'll be on its way out in a matter of hours." Several others made these junior high-style jokes.

5. Green Goodness?

When it comes to leafy greens, to each his own, one respondent has an issue with one lush green in particular. "Hear me out - kale. In the 90s, it was only used to decorate salad bars; then, everyone started eating it because it was healthier than iceberg lettuce. But to make it edible in a salad, you have to trim off the stems and then massage it. Just tear up some romaine and be done with it. Also, no one has time for kale chips — that is just a last-ditch effort to make kale appealing."

6. Wraps, What Wraps?

Another participant feels food has mostly stayed the same in the last two decades. "However, I remember wraps being everywhere as the "healthy" option in the early 2000s. That's about it."

7. Pinterest Uninterest

Someone pulls their opinion based on items they no longer see on their Pinterest boards. "Based on what I no longer see on Pinterest...Cauliflower crust things, zucchini noodles, and anything made in an Instant Pot. Those were all huge several years ago."

8. Tree Milk

Another individual thinks water might be the source of the next food to go the way of the Dodo. "Almond milk — it's far too water-intensive to grow almonds, and as the cost goes up, people will find alternatives."

9. School Lunch Staples

A second respondent is positive that snack cakes like Swiss rolls and oatmeal cream pies are toast. "Snack cakes (like Little Debbie's). Most people who eat them are elderly residents or little kids because they're easy to put in a school lunch. An increasing number of people outside those age groups seem to  find them unappealing."

10. It's Shake and Bake

Remember the old Shake and Bake commercial where the little boy says, "It's Shake-n-Bake, and I helped!"? Well, somebody is relatively sure that no one eats store-bought breading anymore. "Are people still doing Shake and Bake? Hamburger Helper? Sloppy Joe's? I used to love this stuff but haven't had it in decades."

11. Liquid Sugar

If you're over thirty, you'll likely remember the Kool-aid man and the refreshingly cool taste of tropical punch on a hot summer day. Yeah, at least one forum user thinks the Kool-aid man isn't so cool anymore. "Powdered, sugary drinks like Kool-aid."

12. Christmas Doorstopper

Have you ever seen a Christmas doorstopper before? It's usually disguised as a loaf of fruit cake. One holiday Scrooge isn't a fan. "Fruit cake, who eats that stuff?"

13. Cans of Juice

Before juice came in a jug, it was housed in cans of frozen concentrate. Someone noticed that no one seems to buy this form of juice anymore. "Frozen juice concentrate. I remember making orange juice from a can of concentrate. I always had a stockpile of cans in my freezer. The bottled orange juice always tasted terrible. Then about 25 years ago, bottled juice started improving, and frozen concentrate became less popular. You can still get the frozen stuff, but I rarely see people using it anymore."

14. Vegetarian Please

Whether economics, ecologically, or simple logistics, one forum participant is sure that meat is on its way out. "Meat. I don't think we'll be able to afford meat — financially or ecologically — for much longer."

15. Fish and Fondue

One fish flunky thinks certain dishes might be expired permanently. "I'm thinking canned tuna dishes and fondue."

16. Does it Come Gourmet?

If it isn't gourmet, it isn't right. At least, that's what some people must have thought once upon a time. One reader is certain gourmet foods are on a slippery slope of doom. "The dessert cycle went gelato/gourmet ice cream, cupcakes, and cookies. The gourmet cookie trend will not last long, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next dessert were throwback-y. Not Jell-O because it's not very portable, not super satisfying, and often not vegetarian, or anything that you can't make in individual portions and don't have to keep super cold. Maybe a variation on pie (I feel like pie's gotten passed over in the gourmet dessert fads) — possibly hand pies?"

Nostalgia

Sometimes a dish you haven't eaten since childhood can bring a heady dose of nostalgia into your life when you taste that food again. Oftentimes that's a great thing, but just as often, it can be a miserable memory. Whether you love Hamburger Helper and Gelato or hate their existence, some foods will die off with every fad diet. And yet others, like frozen Salisbury steak, will live on as a simple but tasty last-minute meal option. Source: Reddit.
