Sometimes meals don't turn out as planned, leading to less-than-appetizing experiences. Here are 12 unforgettable times when the food was so off-putting, it made us swear off another bite, illustrating that culinary disasters can happen to anyone.

1. The Paradoxical Feast

One user found himself in a sticky situation: “terribly overcooked liver with onions that were somehow simultaneously undercooked and nearly burnt.” As he was eating at his friend’s house, in front of the friend’s mother, who had cooked the dish, he couldn’t leave it be.

Thankfully, a tall glass of juice helped him take it all down. Even his friend was shocked as he later told him, “Dude, I can't believe you ate that."

2. Bean Dip Extravaganza

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, in comes a bean dip made with coffee grounds and Guinness beer. The user writes, “You could taste them (coffee grounds) and feel the texture, too. It was not subtle.” Yikes!

3. Talk About Bland

At just the tender age of 9, a member found themselves in a horrific situation. They were forced to eat plain rice in a casserole with semi-cooked zucchini and a lot of lemon squeezed on top. The worst part? They weren’t allowed to use salt and pepper and drink anything, including water. It’s brutal out here.

4. The Peanut Chicken Fiasco

A member shares that their mother had a phase of trying to expand her repertoire of recipes, where she would try a new dish every day. Once, when they had friends over, their mother presented them with “peanut chicken.” You heard that right! A chicken drowned in peanuts.

“It looked very much like diarrhea.” Thankfully, the mom was a true winner who didn’t let them proceed with the dish and ordered a pizza instead.

5. Hot Green Bell Pepper Water

On the first meeting, one individual’s mother-in-law made them soup. “It was bitter and horrible, and wanting to make a good impression, I gagged it down.” The user shares that although this happened over forty years ago, they still can’t bring themselves to consume green bells.

6. The Secret Gravy

A member mentions how their “half-crazy” Vietnam veteran uncle saves the marinade (mixed with raw meat juices) to later pour as a topping when the meat has been cooked. “First and last time I was a dinner guest. Now I do the cooking and make him go buy the beer,” the member comments. Maybe this one should’ve remained a secret for all.

7. Squid Stuffed With Horror

Here’s another time one had to forcefully consume a horrible dish in order to impress their mother-in-law. This time, it was a squid filled with a stuffing of ground meat and bread, which was then cooked in red wine. “When it was served, it looked so tragic; the squid almost tore open from the stuffing. It looked like a scene from a gore movie.”

8. MIL’s Love Misses the Mark

One mentions that upon finding out roast beef was her favorite dish, her mother-in-law would often make it for her. Sweet, yes? The only sad part is she wouldn’t do a good job on it. “She boiled to death a roast in a crock pot with just water and onions and served it. It was gray and tasteless.”

9. Barbecue Gone Wrong

At a potluck, one of the members brought their “famous” barbecued chicken. Sounds yummy until you realize it’s just a whole chicken, boiled for an hour in a bottle of barbecue sauce and dumped into the water for the last 15 minutes. We’re no pros at cooking, but we’re pretty sure that’s not how you do it.

10. The Spaghetti Sauce Crime

One shares that until he was an adult, he thought he didn’t like food. Well, it turns out it was just that his mother cooked horrible food. “Her spaghetti sauce was just canned tomato paste, water, salt, and ground beef.”

Upon revisiting his mum, she revived old times by cooking for him again. Well, this time, it was a new recipe where she had substituted two diced onions for the same ratio of minced garlic. A crime!

11. Raw Regrets

A member’s friend got interested in the raw food movement and invited them over for a dinner party. Well, one of the dishes was a burrito made with raw beans that were supposed to be soaked for a long time. Turns out, they weren’t soaked well enough, which nearly made everyone puke.

12. Pea Can Mash-up

One person’s buddy’s go-to dish growing up was draining the juice out of a pea can, throwing in some ketchup, and mashing it together. Ate it straight out of the can! Well, at least he saved time on washing the dishes.
