10 Foods We Love, Even When Most People Can’t Stand Them

Pineapple and Pepperoni Pizza
Some foods really split the crowd. While one person might be obsessed with a certain dish, another might avoid it at all costs. From pineapple on pizza to the strong taste of sardines, these are the foods we love, even when others just don’t get it. They might be controversial, but they’ve got a special place in our hearts.

1. Overdone Scrambled Eggs

Eggs can be a challenging item to cook. A lot of people enjoy a runny yolk or a soft, velvety scramble to their eggs. But some prefer a more well-done egg. Expert chefs will tell you an overcooked scrambled egg will be dry and unappealing, but that's not the case for some breakfast dinners. One fan of the over-cooked egg defends herself, saying, "There's a fine line between perfectly cooked and slimy, and I'm real tired of slimy. I'll overcook a little to avoid slimy and order scrambled well to avoid slime."

2. Candy Corn

For some reason, these wax-like, tasteless abominations keep showing up on the shelves every year. I always wonder who buys these gross candies. Turns out some people love them. They are still ranked as one of the most hated Halloween candies of all time, but there is enough demand that they are still made. One conspiracy theory is that they made a bunch in the 1920s, before people had taste buds, and have been re-selling the original batch for the last hundred years.

3. Pineapple on Pizza

This will surely cause a fight among friends when ordering a shared pizza. Personally, I love the combination of sweet and savory, so I love pineapple on pizza. Still, others will argue to the death that pineapple does not belong on a pizza pie. You know, you can get the pizza half and half and save a friendship in the meantime.

4. Steak Sauce

Since when has it become taboo to add a little extra flavor to your steaks? Many steak eaters are bouncing back at the idea that a steak should be eaten plain without a delicious steak sauce. One restaurant goer argues that if an establishment has a bottle of A-1 sauce, why shouldn't they enjoy it without shame from their beef-loving, purist friends? Also, If they want their meat cooked well done, let them have it well done. No more meat shaming!

5. Undercooked Bacon

More and more folks agree that a chewy, undercooked bacon strip is far superior to a crispy, burnt piece of bacon. Why does this tasty strip of pork have to have the consistency and texture of a cracker? Why can't we chew the meat and enjoy the salty flavor instead of crumbling into a million pieces? Also, can we stop arguing about bacon and all agree it's delicious no matter how it's cooked? Thank you.

6. Ketchup on Hot Dogs

This might be a regional thing because I know putting ketchup is a no-no in cities like Chicago. But can we lighten up and break the norm, people! One Chicagoan is fighting back at establishments that ban ketchup on hot dogs, saying he will do whatever he wants. Another claims to carry ketchup packets in her purse to avoid the rude grunts from the workers when she orders her dog. Who knew this was such a controversy?

7. Sardine Sandwiches

Fishy, salty, cold sardine sandwiches may be an acquired taste, but I'm not required to try them. Others love the briny seafood treat. One person mixes mustard and mayo on a toasted piece of bread for a simple go-to snack. He says his wife constantly complains about the fishy smell, but he won't stop enjoying the treat he grew up on.

8. Spam

Another salty meat that comes in an unappealing can, Spam, is a delicacy in Hawaii. Fun fact: during World War II, Spam was sent to the island as an alternative to meat. The locals loved the product, and it's now a staple in their cuisine. On the mainland, it is a divided vote on whether or not Spam is good. Most people either love it or hate it.

9. Black Licorice

Before good candy was invented, black licorice was there for sugar cravings. I'm kidding, obviously, but some sugar fiends love this mouth-staining black candy. It has actually been known to increase blood pressure in people over 40, so this candy may slowly disappear.

10. Pickled Eggs

Before moving to the South, I was unfamiliar with a pickled egg. It doesn't sound very appetizing. But down here in the Southern states, they seem to pickle anything. One Southerner writes about her friends making fun of her for eating them while she was at college up north. They wouldn't even try them, she adds. Sounds like it was something she grew up on that made her love them to this day. Source: Reddit.
