10 Foods Only Old People Eat

Food trends are often generational, and the population’s tastes change over time. International cuisine plays a part in this phenomenon as new, innovative dishes are brought to the table.

At the same time, more established meals can die out. Here is a list of 10 foods that, according to many online sources, only older people eat. Will they disappear completely, or will the millennials eventually adopt them?

1. Stewed Prunes

Is there any other reason for eating stewed prunes than to aid digestion and relieve constipation? This dish was put forward on a popular discussion board, and the poster said it tastes better than it sounds. (It doesn’t.)

2. Liver and Onions

Offal (animal organs) of any kind may be going out of fashion, so we could substitute the liver for kidneys, heart, tongue, and all other unpleasant parts of the animal. Liver and onions were popular in the 1970s, and many feel they’re only eaten now by people in their 70s.

3. Oatmeal

Any high-fiber breakfast cereal falls into this category. Oatmeal, bran, and wheat biscuits aren’t the nicest-tasting foods. It’s widely suggested that they are mainly eaten by seniors who need to keep themselves "regular," although that’s not a comforting thought as we age. In the U.S., these foods have become known as being heart-healthy, so they do enjoy some popularity in that country.

4. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

Most people love mashed potatoes, and consider a generous serving of gravy to be a perfect accompaniment. On its own, however, this is a meal without any meat or other protein, and it is mostly loved by the older generations.

5. Pork Chops

As a picky eater, I could never understand the appeal of pork chops as a child. Where was the meat hiding, and why did my parents eat all the fat down to the bone? Today, many feel pork chops belong to previous generations, and I’m happy to have left them behind.

6. Hard Caramels

Has anyone under 60 ever bought a bag of Werther’s original candy? It’s a strange choice because the hard sweet is tough on teeth that become vulnerable as we age. In the UK, even the advertising campaigns for this brand are aimed firmly at seniors.

7. Baked Apple

Growing up in the UK in the 1970s, I had parents and grandparents who lived through the days of post-war rationing. I was fed some unusual meals I haven’t experienced since, and the baked apple was one. It was delicious with currants mixed in but far too sweet, and I can’t recall ever finishing one.

8. Meatloaf

Many readers will be surprised to see this included since it’s an American family staple. The counterargument is that meatloaf originated in the Great Depression and was used to make ground beef go further. Some now believe that it’s a dish that only older adults eat.

9. Steamed Pudding

Steaming has gone out of fashion in the modern kitchen. In years gone by, steamed puddings, with suet as the base element, were far more popular. Older generations still favor many of these recipes, but many youngsters feel that steamed puddings all taste the same, and that taste isn’t a pleasant one.

10. Bread and Dripping

This is another food item from my childhood that I never want to see again. Dripping is meat fat, and plain white bread is dipped into it. The fat congeals, and it's as disgusting as it sounds. My stepfather still eats bread and dripping and is not alone among his generation.
